How to Have a Sure Fire Prosperous Youth Ministry

How to Have a Sure Fire Prosperous Youth MinistryDo you want a youth ministry that is flourishing? Is that your dream? That’s what a prosperous youth ministry is—one that’s flourishing. However, you may ask the question, what does a flourishing youth ministry look like?

It’s one that bears fruit in the lives of the young people beyond the duration of their time in youth ministry. Remember, you are called to bear fruit that will last:

You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name (John 15:16).

“O prosper the work of our hands!” is the fervent cry of the Psalmist in verse 17 of Psalm 90 (NRSV). The Common English Bible simply puts it this way: “Make the work of our hands last!”

Isn’t that your plea also?

Now if you say, but I’m not the only one responsible for their spiritual lives, you would be correct. You’re not. However, what you do is significant. Many youth and adults can attest to the difference youth ministry has made in their lives. You may even be one.

How then to have a sure fire prosperous youth ministry? Let’s turn to Psalm 90 and glean 3 clues.

3 Ways to have a Sure Fire Prosperous Youth Ministry

#1 The God Factor

The recognition of who God is. The Psalmist knew with certainty that God had been their dwelling place, their refuge, their help. Have that certainty. God is eternal—before you and the youth ministry existed, God is. After you and the youth ministry are gone God will still be here. God will still be God. Therefore, start with God and find your strength in God. Do not try to do it on your own.

#2 Seek God’s Wisdom

There is so much happening with young people now that you do not know the half. Much of the environment in which they move is toxic. In many schools they are treated as criminals. What they see and hear is ungodly. They are surrounded by violence and the threat of death. As their leader, constantly ask for godly wisdom to know how to reach them in their deepest need. You know that God will give you wisdom (James 1:5–6).

#3 Be Consistent in Prayer

Guard your life and ministry with prayer. This goes beyond asking God for wisdom, as important as this is. This is that deep time of connecting where you are spiritually nourished. It’s that deep time of connecting where you listen to hear how God would have you lead and what God wants for the ministry. It’s also the place where you pray for your young people by name.

A prosperous youth ministry is one that flourishes beyond the life-span of the youth ministry—one that lasts. If you want one, these are the 3 ways to do so. What lasts is what is brought forth by God through recognizing who God is, placing your trust in God, seeking God’s wisdom, and being consistent in prayer.

No. Did anyone acknowledge how much she had put into it? No. Instead, she had received criticism spoken to her directly and indirectly. Could… Continue Reading
