Could this be the Genuine Reason You Are Missing it?

Could this be the Genuine Reason You Are Missing it?When he set off, he had no idea what to expect. He’d been told to go and that’s what he had done. Upon reflection, he was so glad that he had gone, as vague as his sending off had been. If he had not gone, he would have missed it—the opportunity to connect in a life-giving way with someone who was searching for the answers to life. Obedience had been key. Without obedience, he would indeed have been missing it. Now, because he had been obedient to the Spirit, he was filled with thanksgiving.

Obedience is key in witnessing. It is the genuine reason that you may be missing the opportunity to witness and help others receive God’s love and new life in Jesus Christ. This is so whether you are witnessing in your workplace, in the community, or among the young people in your group. It is to God’s love seen in Christ’s saving work in Jesus Christ. Thus, your witnessing needs to be in the power of the Holy Spirit. With your finite mind, you never know what God is setting up and who is ready to receive the gospel and at what point. You do not and cannot know people’s heart.

Think of Philip in Acts 8. He was obedient to the Spirit and was able to share with the Ethiopian who was receptive, who was looking for guidance:

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. . . . He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him (Acts 8:28-31, 38).

What an opportunity! However, Philip would have been missing it if his ear had not been attentive to the Spirit and he had not obeyed the Spirit’s leading.

You may be waiting for the right moment to speak with someone about the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. This could be one of the young people in your youth group or all of them. How do you define the right moment? Without the Holy Spirit speaking, Philip would not have been near the chariot. Moreover, even if he had been there he might have said to himself, “Ah, he’s busy reading now. Let me wait until he is is finished.” If that had happened, he would have been missing it, missing the opportunity for someone to receive new life.

God is setting something up right now. Are you listening to the Spirit? Will you be obedient to the Spirit? Pray for ears to hear and a heart to obey. Be sure that you are not missing it.

Living fully. Living faithfully. Following Christ.

When You Look Around, Are you Seeing People or Trees?

How would you feel if you asked someone for help and that person put spit on you? That’s what Jesus did in Mark 8:22-25. After Jesus had put saliva on the blind man’s eyes and laid hands on him, Jesus asked the man whether or not he could see anything. Initially, the man saw people. The… Continue Reading
